Provinces of the Late Roman Empire

Hover any province to see its capital, the diocese and praetorian prefecture it belonged to, the modern region it covers, and a brief note on its history. Reorganized under Diocletian and Constantine, this is the empire of the Notitia Dignitatum, c. 400 AD.

According to the late 4th–early 5th century administrative document known as the Notitia Dignitatum, there were 120 Roman provinces in total. The empire was divided into two administrative halves (East and West), which were further subdivided into 14 dioceses:

  • The Eastern Empire: Contained 52 provinces spread across 5 dioceses (Orient, Egypt, Asia, Pontus, and Thrace).
  • The Western Empire: Contained 68 provinces spread across 9 dioceses (Macedonia, Dacia, Italy, Illyricum, Africa, Spain, the Seven Provinces, the Britains, and Gaul).
